A new report from the U.S. Department of Transportation said the U.S. has fallen behind Canada in terms of public transportation infrastructure. The report, called "Public Transportation Infrastructure," said the U.S. lacks the modern public transportation infrastructure necessary to accommodate the estimated 32 million people who are expected to move to urban areas over the next decade. "The U.S. has fallen behind Canada when it comes to infrastructure investment, and has much work to do to catch up to the Canadian standard," said Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. "Our nation's transportation infrastructure is central to our economic and social well-being, and it is important that we invest in its future to support our country's transition to a high-wage, high-skill economy." Canada scored a perfect 100 out of a possible 100 points on its report, while the U.S. scored a 74 out of a possible 100. But Canada still has a leg up when it comes to most aspects of public transportation infrastructure, like high-speed rail. Canada was the only country with a perfect score. Other countries receiving perfect scores included China and France. While Canada received a perfect score, China only scored a 90 and France scored an 80. Over the next decade, both the U.S. and Canada will have to invest in infrastructure to accommodate those living in urban areas, and ease the burden on existing infrastructure. A study by the American Public Transportation Association found that the U.S. spends about $4.6 billion a year to maintain public transportation infrastructure. Canada spends about $2.5 billion per year to maintain the same infrastructure. "The U.S. spends less than one-fourth of what Canada spends on public transportation infrastructure," said American Public Transportation Association President Stephen Cohen. "American commuters also use their vehicles more often than Canadians. But Canada's public transportation infrastructure has been built to accommodate a long-term trend of growing demand, and should therefore be able to better handle the growth that lies ahead
